According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, foodborne illness outbreaks caused by the mishandling of food occurred most often within the retail segment of the food industry, such as restaurants, markets, schools, camps, churches and institutions, where food is prepared and provided to the public.
It is a shared responsibility of the food industry and the government to ensure that food provided to the consumer is safe and does not become a vehicle in a disease outbreak or in the transmission of communicable disease. This shared responsibility extends to ensuring that consumer expectations are met and that food is unadulterated, prepared in a clean environment and honestly presented
A plan review conducted by the Dubois County Health Department is the initial step to operating a retail food business. After reviewing the floor plan, an application and preoperational inspection will be the next steps towards operation.
