County Highway Department

The three commissioners are in charge of the Highway Department.  They appoint a Supervisor, Clerk and Engineer yearly to assist them in overseeing the daily operations.  The Supervisor is the manager of all the operations associated with the County Highway Road System.  The Clerk handles the finances of the Highway and Sanitation Departments and manages the office.  The County Engineer prepares surveys, designs, plans and specifications for all county road and bridge construction projects.

The office also consists of an assistant supervisor and assistant clerk.  The duties of the assistant supervisor are to help the supervisor with the daily operations of the department.  The assistant clerk figures the payroll and verifies the daily crew worksheets.

The County is divided into three districts that consist of four townships.  Each Commissioner’s district consists of a foreman, equipment operator and three truck drivers.  There are also four special machine operators and two mechanics.  Everyone does his or her part in maintaining the County Highway Road System.

The Highway Department also consists of a bridge crew.  Within the bridge crew are a foreman and two-crew member, which replace and maintain the bridges in the county.
