Homestead Deduction Search
INDIANAPOLIS (Mar. 12, 2008) - The Department of
Local Governmnt Finance (DLGF) today released an online
searchable database of properties allowing the
public and county officials to search for properties recieving
homestead deductions. Data submitted to the DLGF by county
assessors and auditors has been compiled into a free, easy-to-use
search tool that will enable users to search by property owners' names
and addresses.
"By providing this information online, taxpayers can confirm
whether or not they are receiving the homestead deduction,” DLGF
Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave said. “Additionally, county officials can
ensure that taxpayers receive only one homestead deduction as allowable
by law ensuring that the property tax burden is distributed fairly.”
Homestead deductions allow homeowners
using a property as a primary residence to qualify for a reduction of
up to one half of the assessed valuation or $45,000, whichever is less,
lowering the property owner’s property tax obligation.
Online searches will return parcel and
tax billing information including property owners’ names and addresses,
property addresses, and billing addresses. Results may indicate
instances in which more than one homestead deduction may be claimed by
a single taxpayer, assisting county officials in determining
eligibility of the homestead deduction or correcting errors in
reporting. Currently, the database contains information from 85
counties that have submitted data for the 2006-pay-2007 tax year.
“By law, it is the responsibility of
the County Auditor to determine eligibility of deductions,” Musgrave
said. “This tool will assist in the identification of filings that may
need to be audited to confirm validity.”
This tool is the latest in several
additions made to the DLGF Web site, making property tax information
more readily available and transparent to Hoosier taxpayers.
The search tools and information are
available from the DLGF's home page at http://www.dlgf.in.gov/.
