Under Indiana state law, every county must have a local Board of Health. A full-time Health Department was established in Dubois County in 1965. The Dubois County Commissioners appoint the seven-member board. The Board of Health serves in an advisory role, sets general administrative policies and can develop ordinances, which are enacted by the County Commissioners. They are also responsible for the review and approval of new programs and changes in existing programs.

The Board appoints a Health Officer, who is the executive officer of the Health Department and serves as the Secretary of the Board of Health.

The activities of the Dubois County Health Department focus on prevention of diseases, health education, environmental health, childhood immunizations and screenings, communicable disease control, as well as networking with other organizations.
